About 20 million babies per year, including most preemies, have low birthweight, weighing less than 5 pounds and 5 ounces at birth. Guidelines for the care of premature and low birthweight babies have recently been updated by the World Health Organization with the help of HumBio Professor Gary Darmstadt.
