Effect of HumBio on my life - Two things, really. First, I remember designing my own hospital administration internship with the hospital CEO in my hometown and spending the summer after my sophomore year having this great experience. The only problem - I hadn't cleared it with Hum Bio and my advisor at the time, Sandy Dornbusch, wasn't very happy with me when I arrived back at Stanford wanting credit. The career advisor at the time, Audrey Bernfield, really went to bat for me, because she knew that for a shy and reserved young girl like me, this initiative was a breakthrough.

And I realized it was life-changing myself, much later, and came to recognize it for launching a self-confidence I did not know I possessed at age 19. I have Audrey to thank for that. The second issue - when I left Stanford and went to Business School, I truly valued the breadth and depth of the Hum Bio program, the perspective it gave me, and the ability to see different points of view. It made me feel kind of sorry for my classmates who had majored in accounting or business and were having to take it all over again in grad school. I believe that perspective and viewpoint have had value for me throughout my career. And, the funniest thing I remember - Donald Kennedy, teaching in the Core and jumping on top of his desk to imitate the sounds a bat makes to navigate without sight.
